Useful Information

How to get an oyster card
Now that you’ve enrolled, you should be able to apply for your student oyster card which can save you a fantastic 1/3 on travelcards. Once you've applied it usually takes about a week to get to you. Unless you live in Duchy House, getting one is more than worth it. To get one you will need to go to https://photocard.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/gotoApply.do?type=student&from=home and to complete your application you'll need:

  • Your university/college enrolment number (the barcode on your Courtauld card)
  • Your course dates
  • A digital photograph
  • A credit/debit card to pay the £10.00 application fee (which you have to pay each year upon renewal)

16-25 Railcard
You can apply for your 16-25 Railcard, which entitles you to discounted train travel both on the overground and outside of London, online or by picking up an application from a National Rail station. If you are over 25 and are a full-time student, you are still eligible for this but you will need to bring a hard copy of the application form to Student Services for certification.

TV licenses
To stream TV live on your laptop you will need a TV license—you are not usually covered by your halls for this and so you definitely need to get your own if you want to watch things live on BBC iplayer etc. But don't get your TV license until the beginning of October. Then you can claim back for the quarter of the year that you're not at university (July/August/September). When you get your TV license it automatically backdates it to the beginning of the month - so if you buy it on the 30th September it starts from the 1st September!!

For those of you looking for somewhere other than Duchy House at the start of the year, this information might help you out!

1. University of London (Intercollegiate Halls) waiting list
The Intercollegiate Halls run a waiting list, for all students who have not managed to secure accommodation during the initial application stage or via other routes. We must stress that there may not be a large number of rooms available through the waiting list so you should not turn down any accommodation in order to be considered on the waiting list instead, as this is by no means guaranteed.

In order to apply for accommodation on the waiting list, you need to apply directly to the Intercollegiate Halls on 9th September 2010 for all halls. Further details will be posted on the University of London website in early September 2010...You will be invited to apply to the waiting list by fax, email or in person. At the beginning of September, the University of London will provide an address, a fax number and an email address, which can be used in order to apply and they will place this on their website at www.london.ac.uk/accom.

No emails, faxes or visits will be considered for the waiting list if they are received outside the times stated above. Applications to the waiting list will be considered for whichever rooms are available and will be prioritized according to need.

2. University of London Housing Services (for Private Sector Housing)

The University of London Housing Services provides help and advice about renting accommodation in the private sector. They do not deal with halls of residence. If you would like to speak to them call 020 7862 8880. However, you will find much of the information you need on the web sites below:

http://housing.lon.ac.uk/sclnew/scl_home.php - this is where you can look for students to share properties with and also a housing database which you can search for properties. In order to use the database you need to register by completing the online form. Once you have done this, you will be sent a password, which is updated each week.

www.studenthousing.london.ac.uk – this is for all students who will be Studying in London and who are looking for accommodation in the private sector. This site provides information on costs and advice on finding a place to stay.

3. International Students House (accommodation for all students; 'Home', 'EU', or 'International')

International Student's House (ISH) is an independent charity and has served London's universities since our establishment in 1965. Students from more than 100 countries including the UK, reside in this lively multicultural environment. Those who live at ISH are part of an international community and share in an experience which enriches their stay, whether they are from overseas or the UK.

We are situated in zone 1, near to the Royal Academy of Music and the University of Westminster, and within walking distance of many of the colleges of the University of London and London's other educational institutions, which helps to save on your travel costs.

Admission to live as a long-term, student resident at International Student House (ISH) is open to any individual who is affiliated with an educational or professional institute as a full-time student, trainee, intern (conditions apply), visiting scholar or researcher doing a minimum of 20 hours study per week. Applications are judged on an individual basis with preference given to those who demonstrate a willingness to participate and become involved in the life of the house.
